Huakaʻi i Waikīkī

December 10, 2016

Dancers and ʻohana of Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai spent the day visiting Waikīkī.  After doing research of the area, and learning dances for Waikīkī, the hālau enjoyed a family day reconnecting with these places.  The keiki danced the Royal Hawaiian Hotel on the lawn of the historic pink hotel.  The women danced for Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop at Helumoa, and for Queen Emma and Kahakuohawaiʻi at the International Market Place.  They also shared hula for Kalākaua and Kapiʻolani near the corner of the park which bears the Queen's name.  A potluck and ocean time was spent, concluding the day with canoe surfing!

Ke ʻAlohi Hula Competition

Ahulani Wright represented Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai at the Ke ʻAlohi Hula Competition held at Waimea Valley. She was honored with the Hawaiian language award, and 2nd place for her hula titled Ke Aloha ʻĀina Paʻa Mau Loa.  

Hula Retreat at Kalopā

Kumu Hula graduates of Māpuana de Silva convened at Kalopā, Hawaiʻi, for a hula retreat. Reconnecting to the foundations of their training, time was spent dancing, discussing important aspects of practice, gathering foliage to make lei, and most importantly, reconnecting with fellow kumu hula and the environment.

ʻOhana Camp

The hālau families gathered for ʻOhana Camp in Punaluʻu, where they spent time connecting with the ʻāina, kai, hula, and each other.

King Kamehameha Hula Competition 2016

The women of Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai presented E Hoʻi Ke Aloha I Niʻihau, in honor of Queen Kapiʻolani, as well as Iā ʻOe E Ka Lā, in honor of King David Kalākaua.  The beautiful voices of Hoʻohihi accompanied the women for their hula ʻauana.  The ladies won first place in the women's kahiko division, as well as awards for Hawaiian language in both kahiko and ʻauana.  

Merrie Monarch 2016

Members of HIKK attended the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo Hawaiʻi, where a week long celebration of hula takes place every year.  

Keiki Lei Workshop

The keiki of Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai learned how to make lei lāʻī, the importance of lei, as well as their kuleana as dancers to care for their adornments.  A member of their family accompanied each dancer to learn alongside and strengthen their own lei making skills.

A visit to ʻIolani Palace

Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai visited ʻiolani Palace, once home to King David Kalākaua and Queen Kapiʻolani.  Dancers explored the historic site, and offered hula in honor of Kalākaua, Kapiʻolani, and Queen Liliʻuokalani.  

Holomua Ka Noʻeau—My ʻIlima Souvenirs

Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai danced at Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima's annual concert held at the historic Hawaiʻi Theatre.  Entitled Holomua Ka Noʻeau—My ʻIlima Souvenirs, this year's concert was extra special, as Māpuana de Silva and Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima celebrated their 40th year!  It was an exceptional night of hula, and a true honor for HIKK to be invited to perform.

Kalena Johnson, of Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai, placed 3rd in the soloist competition held at Waimea Valley.  

In The Name of Aloha

This concert honored the hula legacies of Kekauʻilani Kalama, Maiki Aiu Lake, and Sally Wood Naluai. Kēhaulani Enos danced with members of Hālau Mōhala ʻIlima to pay tribute to Aunty Maiki Aiu Lake. Dances showcased included hula pahu and Pua ʻĀhihi.

Aloha ʻĀina Unity March

August 09, 2015

Dancers of Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai, along with their Kumu, Kēhaulani Enos, joined thousands in a unity march held in Waikīkī to show support for sacred sites and lands in the name of Aloha ʻĀina.  They honored Queen Emma with a mele hula entitled ʻAuhea wale ʻoe e ka ʻōʻō.

Pākolu Ke Aloha Hula Workshop

September 12, 2015

Hālau ʻIlima Kū Kahakai participated in a hula workshop as part of Pākolu Ke Aloha.  The dancers learned I Mauna Lahilahi, taught by kumu hula, Kamanaʻo Manaʻo-Hyde of Hālau Māpuna Leo.  The three hālau visited Mauna Lahilahi in Mākaha and presented their hula in honor of Princess Kaʻiulani.
